A Million
Random Digits
→ Intervention / 2025 The original book was created in 1955 by a group of scientists. This work is installed as sculptural conterpart to my networked scuptures. I place the unbound, perfectly machine-stapled 200-page book, printed in A4 format, on a pedestal or table. The audience flips through the pages, mostly widely intrigured. The neat edges of this paper cube are fraying. This work reflects on fact that computers are unable to create truly random numbers.
Once again, it is the human presence that introduces chaos into a perfect world shaped by mathematics. While mathematics can construct a seemingly perfect and ordered system, human interaction inevitably disrupts that order, transforming perfection into unpredictability. Any way to create randomness mathematically through algorithms leads to patterns giving away the manufacturing. For a period of time, this book served the purpose of offering fully random digits created by a sophisticated physical method. Nowadays there are methods like measuring the keyboard strokes of a person typing or using the patterns in lava lamps to generate randomness, which is quite important for cryptography.
